I recognize keto is the craze and while I am sure it works for some people, I do want to offer some caution about it, especially when it comes to women. Most the issues I have with keto isn’t actually keto itself but rather what I call “social media keto.”
Several years ago, I was working with a trainer and he suggested I try this diet called “keto.” However this “keto” diet had me taking in ZERO carbs for the first couple weeks. The theory is that you are training your body to torch through your fat reserves. This is when ketosis is said to take place. However, I was not consuming bacon, butter coffee and bigger than life steaks….it had me consuming a diet with just zero carbs. Naturally, I could not keep this restrictive diet up ontop of excessively workout. My body was thrown into a combination of shock and a massive hormonal flux.
After my excessive dieting, I went into the whole organic and natural plan. And if it was organic or whole I ate it. I couldn’t lose weight. One of my friend’s husband who is a specialist asked me, “Gina how much almond butter are you exactly eating.” Let’s just say I couldn’t keep a jar in the house that would make it more than 3-4 days. Needless, to say I scaled back and the weight came off.
Flash forward today and Keto is trending everywhere! I was expecting to see nothing but low-carb meals along the lines of a program I was originally on. However, I am seeing butter filled coffee, massive bacon plates and desserts that call for so much coconut cream that my mind has gone numb.
Truth be told, healthy fat is EXCELLENT for you. However an excess of anything is BAD for you. Ladies, listen up! Our bodies want to hold onto fat (whether you want to have babies or not) based on our genetic make-up. This social media “keto” with fat bombs, massive omelets and steak dinners will give men overall better results. Why? Because testosterone cuts through fat. And overall, us women don’t have the testosterone levels to have this affect. I want to be clear, we still need to be taking in healthy fat. Our bodies need it but within reason, not in supersize portions.
If you have other reasons for doing “social media” keto then more power to you but if your goal is weight-loss ladies, than put down your fatty coffee and do yourself a favor and slam a milkshake instead. It will taste better anyways.
Here are some hard truths about weight-loss goals after 30 and babies.
- Portion control is important.
- Your diet should include a variety of veggies.
- You will have to bow out more than bow into mindless eating at work events.
- Everything in moderation, really means everything in moderation.
- It requires discipline-but take heart the rewards are great along the way.
